The list of required legal documents for weddings in Greece can differ depending on the location. With over 200 registry offices and a similar number of Town Halls across Greece, these requirements may change based on the wedding destination. The following information serves as a general guide.
Required Documents Based on Wedding Type:
Civil Wedding:

Passport copies of both parties.

Full birth certificates of both parties, including parents' names, certified by an Apostille stamp.

Certificate of non-impediment to marriage, issued by your local municipality or town hall, certified by an Apostille stamp.

Divorce certificate or certified copy of the Decree Absolute if applicable, certified by an Apostille stamp.

Official document from the court if you have changed your name.

Certificate of adoption, deed poll certificate, or death certificate if applicable.

Apostille stamps for birth certificates and Certificates of Non-Impediment.

Passport copies of 2 witnesses.
Orthodox Wedding:

Passport copies of both parties.

Baptism records of both parties (both must be baptized Christians).

Full birth certificates of both parties, including parents' names, certified by an Apostille stamp.

Certificate letter from your church confirming no previous marriages, certified by the bishop and stating permission to marry in Greece.

Certificate of non-impediment to marriage, certified by an Apostille stamp.

Divorce certificate or certified copy of the Decree Absolute if applicable, certified by an Apostille stamp.

Additional documentation if one party is of another Christian denomination (contact us for more details).

Official document from the court if you have changed your name.

Copy of the newspaper where the wedding notice was posted, if required by the local church and priest.
Catholic or Maronite Wedding:

Baptism records of both parties.

Divorce certificate or certified copy of the Decree Absolute if applicable, certified by an Apostille stamp.

Confirmation certificate.

Freedom to marry certificate, dated within 3 months of the marriage.

Permission from your bishop to marry outside your parish.

Certificate of completion of "Pre-Cana" instructions.
Mixed Religious Weddings:

If between an Orthodox and a Catholic, a religious wedding is possible with specific requirements.

If between an Orthodox and a non-baptized party, a religious wedding is not possible.
General Notes:

All documents must be translated and certified/stamped by the local Greek Embassy or Consulate in your country.

Ensure all names on documents match exactly.

Documents must be dated within 3 months of the wedding.

Register your wedding at the local office of vital statistics after the ceremony.

Stay in Greece at least one working day after the wedding to sign your Marriage Certificate at the Town Hall.

Original wedding certificate with Apostille stamp will be sent to you approximately 20 days after the wedding.

Some Town Halls require a wedding notice in a local newspaper and/or a wedding license from your country, translated and Apostille stamped.

Each church, priest, Town Hall, Mayor, and Registry office has specific requirements; we will provide detailed information as needed.
Registration: Weddings must be registered at the local Registry office within 40 days to be legally recognized. The bride and groom, or a representative with power of attorney, must be present to sign all necessary documents.
